stand oil Also ˈstandoil. [tr. G. standöl: see stand n.1, oil n.1 So called from its formerly being prepared by allowing linseed oil to stand.] Linseed oil or another drying oil that has been thickened by heating, used in paints, varnishes, and printing inks.
