1858Brit. & Foreign Med.-Chir. Rev. XXII. 177 (heading) The nature and origin of spondylolisthesis. 1885Trans. Obstetr. Soc. XXVI. 187 Neugebauer considers that the predisposing cause of spondylolisthesis is either a congenital deficiency between the superior and inferior articular process on both sides, or a fracture of the same parts. 1932Brit. Jrnl. Surg. XIX. 374 There are two types of spondylolisthesis... In [the first]..the entire 5th lumbar vertebra slips forwards upon the sacrum and carries the rest of the spine with it. The second type..consists in the separation (or spondylolysis) of the 5th lumbar vertebra into two portions.., in such a way that the part bearing the spinous process and inferior articular surfaces moves backwards and the rest of the vertebra slips forwards upon the sacrum. 1977Proc. R. Soc. Med. LXX. 421/1 In a proportion of patients the spondylolysis progresses to spondylolisthesis and may then cause symptoms and signs. 1981Church Times 4 Sept. 12/4 As one born with congenital spondylolisthesis (a dangerous defect of the spine linkage requiring bone grafts chiselled off my hip), I am delighted with my restricted life. Hence ˌspondylolisˈthetic a.
1884Amer. Jrnl. Med. Sci. LXXXVIII. 600 Neugebauer's description of spondylolisthetic subjects applied exactly to this case. 1932Brit. Jrnl. Surg. XIX. 380 That the supports of the spondylolisthetic 5th lumbar vertebra are very insecure is obvious. |
