a. A large genus of perennial plants of the N.O. Compositæ, the N. American species of which are especially numerous; golden-rod.
b. A plant of this genus, esp. S. virgaurea, a European and British species, formerly in repute for its medicinal properties, now largely cultivated as a garden flower.
