The name Colombia was given to a large territory (formerly New Granada) which achieved independence from Spain in 1819. This entity broke up in 1830, with Venezuela and Ecuador becoming separate independent states, leaving the remainder (which included Panama until 1903) as the Granadine Confederation, which was renamed the United States of Colombia in 1863.
