quinacridone Chem.|kwɪˈnækrɪdəʊn| [f. quinoline + acridine + -one.] Any of four synthetic isomeric compounds, C20H12N2O2, or their substituted derivatives, which have a heteroaromatic structure consisting of a string of five fused rings (three benzene and two 4-pyridone arranged alternately) and which include a class of usu. red or violet pigments. Also attrib. and in Comb., as quinacridone red, quinacridone violet, etc.

XLVI. 29 Quinacridone red yellowish, quinacridone red bluish and quinacridone violet which were issued by Du Pont in 1958,..were the first of the quinacridones. Chemically, all three pigments are one and the same unsubstituted linear trans-quinacridone. 1969R. Mayer Dict. Art Terms & Techniques 321/2 Besides this relatively yellowish or scarlet shade, bluish, magenta, and violet shades are also made from the same dyestuff (linear quinacridone) that yields quinacridone red. 1972Materials & Technol. V. xi. 358 Quinacridone reds, maroons and violets are a comparatively recent introduction. These very expensive pigments have excellent light-fastness in full colours and in pastel shades. 1973Tilak & Ayyangar in R. M.
