Jap. shikimi Japanese anise (from which it was first isolated): see prec., -ic.] shikimic acid: a hydro-aromatic acid, C6H6(OH)3(COOH), which is formed in many bacteria and higher plants as an intermediate in the synthesis of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and other aromatic compounds from aliphatic precursors.
1886Jrnl. Chem. Soc. L. 95 Shikimic acid, C7H10O5,..is a white, crystalline compound, insoluble in alcohol, ether, and chloroform, but readily soluble in water. 1953Fruton & Simmonds Gen. Biochem. xxxi. 742 It would appear..that at least four aromatic compounds can be formed from carbohydrate by mechanisms that involve shikimic acid as an intermediate. 1978Nature 20 July 216/2 The exact nature of the bracken fern ‘carcinogen’ remains elusive and although various chemicals, such as shikimic acid, which have been extracted from bracken show some oncogenic activity, the major compound responsible has not yet been identified. |
