† sheriff's tooth Obs. Forms: 3 schirrefstuthe, 4 shirrevestothe, 5 sheriffs-tooth, (8 sheriff-tooth). [Cf. phrase ‘for one's own tooth’ in tooth n. 3.] An annual impost (complained of in 1327–77 by Derbyshire tenants as a wrongful exaction) levied by the sheriff on each bovate of land within his county.
