chalazogamic, a. Bot.|ˌkæləzəʊˈgæmɪk| [ad. F. chalazogame (M. Treub 1891, in Ann. Jardin Bot. de Buitenzorg X. 219), f. Gr. χάλαζα chalaza + γάµος marriage + -ic.] Defining fertilization in which the pollen-tube penetrates the ovule by the chalaza. Hence ˈchalazogam, a plant characterized by this mode of fertilization; chalaˈzogamy, chalazogamic fertilization.
1894Times 11 Aug. 11/3 Miss Benson read a paper upon ‘Chalazogamic Amentiferæ’..showing that..the pollen-tube forces its way through the chalaza in order to effect fertilization, and hence must be included among the group of chalazogams...
