[A specialized form of arrogate, f. L. adrogāt- ppl. stem of adrogā-re or arrogāre, to ask or claim to oneself, to adopt one whose consent may be legally asked, f. ad to + rogāre to ask. Arrogate was formerly used in all senses, but mod. writers on Rom. Law have appropriated this differentiated form for the special sense.]
Rom. Law. To adopt a person who was at the time sui juris, or his own master, and under the potestas or legal power of no one else.
