pyroxferroite Min.|paɪrɒksˈfɛrəʊaɪt| [f. ferro- + -ite1, after next.] A yellow pyroxenoid, Fe6Ca(SiO3)7, that has been found on the moon and is an iron-rich analogue of pyroxmangite.
1970E. C. T. Chao et al. in Proc. Apollo 11 Lunar Sci. Conf. I. 65 Pyroxferroite was first recognized by the LSPET (1969) as an unidentified yellow mineral that seemed to be concentrated in vuggy areas of the Type B rock. Ibid. 75 Lindsley (1967) recently synthesized pyroxferroite of composition Ca0·15Fe0·85SiO3 at pressures from 10 to 17·5 kbar and temperatures from 1130 to 1250°C. 1973Sorrell & Sandstrom Rocks & Minerals of World 60 The major lunar minerals are calcic plagioclase..and pyroxene... Common are olivine..and pyroxferroite, CaFe6(SiO3)7, a new mineral similar to the pyroxenes. |
