[Fr. (Buffon), a. Pg. sarigué, in 16th c. çarigué, cerigoé, serigoé (whence the earlier forms); used erron. for Brazilian sarigueya, a derivative of Sarigué, which is the name of an Indian people.
Several other forms of the word are quoted by Ray Syn. Quad., 1693, Pennant Hist. Quad., 1781, and Smellie tr. Buffon's Nat. Hist. 1780–5.]
