† ˈptychode Bot. Obs. [f. Gr. πτῠχώδης in folds or layers, f. πτῠχή a fold + -ειδης = -form.] Hartig's name for a supposed membrane lining certain vegetable cells; in reality the contracted protoplasmic layer in contact with the cell-wall.
1849Ray Soc. Rep. & Pap. Bot. 222 He was led to these researches by Hartig's investigations upon the structure of cells, and his assumption of their possessing a more internal membrane which lines their interior, and which he denominated a Ptychode. |
