‖ ritenuto, a., adv., and n. Mus.|riteˈnuto| [It., pa. pple. of ritenere, f. L. retinēre to hold back.] A. adj. and adv. Of musical movement: restrained, held back in tempo. Used adverbially as a direction indicating immediate reduction of speed. B. n. (pl. ritenuti or ritenutos). A phrase or passage thus indicated.
