In full Australopithecus africanus, a form of anthropoid ape known from fossil remains discovered at Taung in Bechuanaland in 1924 (cf. Taung). Hence Auˌstraloˈpithecine a. and n., pl. -s; also in mod.L. form Australopithecinæ.
