The Du. and LG. word is usually referred to MLG., LG. plicht, MDu., Du. plecht, a small fore (or after) -deck of an open boat, OHG. phlihta, MHG. pflíhte, Da., Sw. pligt; Doornkaat-Koolman (Ostfr. Wbch.) prefers derivation from plicht responsibility: see plight n.1] The main anchor of a ship; in quots. fig.: cf. sheet-anchor.
