F. pénitencier, ad. med.L. pæni-, pœnitēntiārius, which took the place of the popular F. form peneancier, penancer.] 1. In the mediæval Church, a priest appointed to hear confession, assign penance, and give absolution in extraordinary cases; a penitentiary.
