rue-raddy, n.
[Of obscure origin.]
1. A belt or rope passed over the shoulder in order to drag something by it.
1856Kane Arct. Expl. I. 112 Each man had his own shoulder-belt or rue-raddy as we used to call it, and his own track line. 1880Standard 20 May 3 One section of the men are armed..with long knives and a ‘rue raddy’, or drag rope, slung across the shoulders.
2. transf. One who drags by means of a belt or rope passing over the shoulder.
1856Kane Arct. Expl. II. xix. 190 An additional burden, but a necessary one, for our weary rue-raddies.
Hence rue-raddy v., to attach by means of a shoulder rope.
1856Kane Arct. Expl. I. xv. 181 Five men were then rue-raddied to the track-lines. |
