‖ Paramecium Zool.|pærəˈmiːsɪəm| Also erron. -mæcium, -mœcium. [mod.L. f. Gr. παραµήκ-ης oblong, oval, f. παρά against + µῆκος length: cf. L. ob-longus.] A genus of holotrichous ciliate Infusoria, type of the family Parameciidæ, of oblong shape, having the mouth near the middle of the ventral surface; also called, from their shape, slipper-animalcules. Hence paraˈmecine a., belonging to this family.
