oxazine, n. Chem.|ˈɒksəziːn| [ad. G. Oxazin (O. Widman 1888, in Jrnl. f. Prakt. Chemie XXXVIII. 197), f. a rearrangement of Azoxin (A. Bernthsen 1887, in Ber. Deut. Chem. Ges. XX. 942): see oxo-, azo-, -ine5.] Any compound containing a ring of one nitrogen, one oxygen, and four carbon atoms in the molecule, such as gallamine blue; spec., any of a class of monocyclic compounds with this structure having the formula C4H5NO . Originally, any of a class of dyes derived from phenoxazine and containing such a ring.
1889Jrnl. Soc. Chem. Industry 31 Dec. 1004/2 The colouring matters obtained from the chromogen..are called oxazines. Widman defines oxazines or azoxines as bodies containing a ring of six atoms: one nitrogen atom, one oxygen atom, and four carbon atoms, which are joined by eight bonds of affinity. This class of bodies is of greater interest, since the author's studies on morphine have rendered it probable that this important base and other alkaloids may be considered as oxazines. 1893Thorpe Dict. Appl. Chem. III. 79/1 Oxazine colouring matters. The azines or colouring matters of the saffranine group..are derivatives of phenazine... The colouring matters of the present group are similarly derived from phenoxazine. 1928C. E. Mullin Acetate Silk & its Dyes x. 140 The thiazine dyes, such as Methylene Blue, are not usually so satisfactory; but the oxazine dyes, which contain an atom of oxygen in place of the sulfur atom present in the thiazine dyes, are useful. 1955S. E. Krahler in H. A. Lubs Chem. Synthetic Dyes & Pigments v. 259 The first oxazine dye was prepared by Meldola in 1879, when he heated an equimolar mixture of 2-naphthol and N, N-dimethyl-p-nitrosoaniline hydrochloride in acetic acid. 1978M. Sainsbury in S. Coffey Rodd's Chem. Carbon Compounds (ed. 2) IV. h. xli. 427 Oxazines are six-membered monocyclic structures of the general molecular formula C4H5NO . Depending upon the relative orientation of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms and the disposition of the double bonds in the heterocycle nine isomeric forms are possible. |
