单词 resequent
释义 resequent, a. (n.) Geomorphol.|ˈriːsɪkwənt, rɪˈsiːkwənt|
[f. re- + -sequent in consequent, subsequent adjs.]
a. Designating, or characterized by the presence of, a stream or streams having a course which follows the dip of strata in the manner of a consequent stream but is stratigraphically at a lower level than the original surface of the underlying geological formation. Hence as n., a resequent stream.
1906W. M. Davis in Bull. Amer. Geogr. Soc. XXXVIII. 608, I suggested a few years ago that streams which, after spontaneous development aside from an original consequent course, come again to follow it, should be called resequent streams.Ibid., In the third stage..a new series of similar streams—lateral resequents—is beginning to be developed on the crown of the then newly-uncovered hard-rock anticlines.1937Wooldridge & Morgan Physical Basis Geogr. xv. 212 A good example is afforded by the Central Weald of Kent and Sussex, where there are many good examples of synclinal valleys for which resequent origin must be deemed probable.1954W. D. Thornbury Princ. Geomorphol. v. 114 Resequent valleys drain in the same direction as the original consequent drainage but are at lower topographic levels and have developed with respect to new base levels of erosion.1970R. J. Small Study of Landforms iii. 91 Where inversion of relief has once been achieved, continued erosion can lead to a restoration of the original structure-relief relationship; the synclinal valleys and anticlinal ridges are then, strictly speaking, ‘resequent’.Ibid., vii. 235 Synclinal streams may even be ‘resequents’, which are traditionally regarded as the eventual outcome of drainage development in areas of folded rocks.
b. Of a fault-line scarp or a related feature: having a relief similar to that originally produced by the faulting; freq. spec. where such relief results from erosion of an obsequent scarp.
1913W. M. Davis in Bull. Geol. Soc. Amer. XXIV. 198 If this change of form is a slope, more or less perfectly graded, descending to the relatively depressed side, it may be called a resequent scarp.1941C. A. Cotton Landscape xxiii. 265 Fault-line scarps are of two kinds, resequent and obsequent, according as they face in the direction the initial fault-scarp faced on the same line of fault or in the opposite direction.Ibid., Resequent fault-line scarps..are commoner than obsequent.1970R. J. Small Study of Landforms iii. 105 It will be seen that consequent and resequent scarps are very similar, and indeed many would argue that to make a distinction between them is purely academic, on the grounds that it is invariably impossible to decide in actual cases whether or not an obsequent scarp has previously existed along a fault-line (and thus whether the scarp in question is resequent or not).
