L. ornithogalē (Pliny), Gr. ὀρνιθόγαλον, f. ὀρνιθο- bird + γάλα milk, adopted as the name of a genus by Linnæus (Hortus Cliffortianus (1737) 124) and earlier botanists.] A bulbous plant of the genus so called, belonging to the family Liliaceæ, native to Europe, Asia, or Africa, and usually bearing racemes of white flowers; Ornithogalum umbellatum, = ornithogal, star of Bethlehem (star n.1 22 c).
