The name of a town in Leicestershire (more fully Melton Mowbray), a famous hunting centre. Used attrib. in Melton jacket, a kind of jacket formerly worn by hunters; Melton pad, a hernia truss specially suited to be worn on horseback. Also in Melton cloth (see quot. 1882) and ellipt. as n.
