Malpighian, a. Anat. and Bot.|mælˈpɪgɪən| [f. Malpighi (see malpighiaceous) + -an.] 1. Anat. The distinctive epithet of certain structures discovered by Malpighi, and of others connected with these. Malpighian bodies, Malpighian corpuscles: certain minute bodies in the substance of the kidney. Malpighian corpuscles of the spleen: the lymphatic corpuscles of that organ. Malpighian capsules (see quot. 1866). Malpighian layer: the inner layer of the epidermis. Malpighian pyramids: the medullary substance of the kidney, consisting of palish red-coloured, striated conical masses. Malpighian tubules: the uriniferous tubes of which the kidney is for the most part made up. Malpighian tuft: a vascular glomerule of convoluted capillary blood-vessels in the kidney.
