magcon, n. Astron.|ˈmægkɒn| [f. magnetization concentration, after mascon n.] Any of several regions of the lunar surface where the magnetic field strength is anomalously high.
1971A. Barnes et al. in Science 14 May 716/3 It is unlikely that such a region of permanent magnetism (‘magcon’) is unique. Ibid. 717/2 We expect that at some distance from the limb the presence of a magcon is manifested in a hydromagnetic shock wave. 1983Nature 18 Aug. 589/2 The discovery of small regions of the [Moon's] surface with magnetic fields of 10nT coherent over many 10 km, termed ‘magcons’. 1987Geophysical Res. Lett. XIV. 846/2 From the observed angular extents of the magcons (several hundred km), field amplifications by factors of..300 may be expected. |
