Anglist|ˈæŋglɪst| [a. G. Anglist, f. L. Anglus English (see Angle n.3): see -ist.] A student of English, or scholar versed in English language or literature.
1888Jrnl. Educ. Jan. 32 The ‘Anglist’ is warned that he has yet stricter duties to fulfil than the ‘Germanist’. Most Anglists, it appears, in Germany conceive that they have done their duty if they have studied thoroughly Gothic, German, and English. 1930K. Malone in English Jrnl. XIX. 640 On the Continent our subject is known as Anglistics..and a worker in it is called an Anglist. Hence Anˈglistics n. pl., the study of English language or literature.
