lecithinase Biochem.|ˈlɛsɪθɪneɪz, -eɪs| [f. lecithin + -ase.] = phospholipase.
1910Chem. Abstr. IV. 2680 Lecithinase is itself almost or entirely free from toxicity, showing its independence from the neurotoxin of cobra venom. 1947Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CLXIX. 704 Four types of lecithinases, each acting on a separate ester linkage of the lecithin molecule, were postulated by Contardi and Ercoli in 1932.., but the existence of only three of these has hitherto been demonstrated. These are (a) the enzyme found in cobra serum..which splits off a single unsaturated fatty acid from the lecithin molecule; (b) the enzyme found in rice hulls..and Aspergillus oryzae.., which splits off both fatty acids; (c) the enzyme found in Clostridium welchii.., which separates the phospholipide molecule at its ester linkage between the glycerol and the phosphoric acid. 1959Biochem. Jrnl. LXXI. 619/1 It may be of significance for the biological function of intestinal lecithinase that the optimum conditions for its activity are those which can be expected to prevail in the mucosal cells during absorption of fat. 1970D. R. Dilley in A. C. Hulme Biochem. Fruits I. viii. 181 Proteases and lecithinase increase lysosomal permeability. |
