centriole Cytology.|ˈsɛntrɪəʊl| [ad. G. centriol (T. Boveri 1895, in Verh. d. Physik.-Med. Ges. Würzburg XXIX. i. 66), f. mod.L. centriolum, dim. of centrum centre.] A minute, apparently self-reproducing particle which is present, usu. as one of a pair, in the centrosome and which is important for its part in forming and organizing the mitotic apparatus during cell-division.
