1847Capt. Newbold in Jrnl. Asiatic Soc. Bengal XIV. 305 Lateritic sandstone. 1880V. Ball Jungle Life Ind. i. 4 A very notable change..from a swampy alluvium into a lateritic gravel. 1927,1932[see laterite]. 1938U.S. Dept. Agric. Year-bk. 974 Soils in which the laterization process has become markedly evident but has not reached completion are known as lateritic soils... They are very important in the West Indies... These soils are characterized by a colloidal fraction whose molecular ratio of silica to alumina is approximately 2. 1946Lutz & Chandler Forest Soils xi. 403 The laterization process, in conjunction with podzolization, has resulted in the development of six zonal soils in the forested warm-temperature and tropical regions: (1) laterites, (2) reddish-brown lateritic soils, (3) yellowish-brown lateritic soils, (4) red podzolic soils, (5) yellow podzolic soils, and (6) terra rossa. 1952L. M. Thompson Soils & Soil Fertility xvii. 285 The clay soils which he studied..were lateritic in nature (high percentage of kaolinite or high in hydrated oxides of iron and aluminum), and it is now recognized that lateritic or kaolinitic materials are resistant to erosion. 1970Toronto Daily Star 24 Sept. 14/7 He pointed to the lateritic, or oxide, ores of the tropics and subtropics as an area where future major expansion in the industry will occur. |
