An instrument for showing the direction of the wind, or foretelling a change of weather.
1706Phillips, Anemoscope, a Device invented to foreshew the Change of the Air, or the Shifting of the Wind. 1727–51Chambers Cycl. s.v., Hygroscopes made of cat's gut, etc., proved very good anemoscopes. 1744Pickering in Phil. Trans. XLIII. 9 The Anemoscope is a Machine four Feet and a Quarter high, consisting of a broad and weighty Pedestal, a Pillar fastened into it and an iron Axis, of about half an Inch Diameter, fastened into the Pillar.
