Krause|ˈkraʊzə| The name of Wilhelm Krause (1833–1909), Ger. anatomist and histologist, used in the possessive and with of-adjunct to designate structures in the body which he investigated, as: a. A kind of encapsulated plexus of sensory nerve endings found in mucous membranes, the dermis, the conjunctiva, and elsewhere. b. (A transverse membrane appearing as) a thin dark line separating adjacent sarcomeres in a striated muscle fibril. c. Each of the numerous small accessory lacrimal glands situated under the conjunctiva close to where it joins the eyeball. a.1872H. Power tr. Stricker's Man. Human & Compar. Histol. II. xxix. 317 The nerves of the glans [penis] are very numerous and..end within the papillae in Krause's terminal bulbs. 1875A. Gamgee tr. Hermann's Elem. Human Physiol. x. 457 Terminal nerve bodies (Krause's corpuscles) are oval, or more or less rounded vesicles of 0·03–0·06 mm, consisting of an areolar sheath, with nuclei and soft homogeneous contents, in which the nerve-fibre runs, terminating in a point. 1888A. Flint Text-bk. Human Physiol. (ed. 4) xvi. 516 In certain membranes the nerves terminate in end-bulbs, or corpuscles of Krause. 1953C. E. Osgood Method & Theory Exper. Weale Eye & its Function ii. 30 Their shape is reminiscent of one type of pressure receptor, namely Krause's corpuscle. 1972M. L. Barr Human Nervous Syst. iii. 35/2 It was thought at one time that end-bulbs of Krause were receptors for coolness and end-bulbs of Ruffini for warmth, but the evidence that these are special temperature sensors is no longer regarded as conclusive. b.1873Phil. Trans. R. Soc. CLXIII. 442 The transverse membrane of Krause and the narrow disk of intermediate substance..of Heppner would seem to be referable to the heads of two contiguous series of muscle-rods, which..often meet in the middle of the clear stripe. 1887Buck's Handbk. Le Gros Clark Tissues of Body v. 99 Cutting through the isotropic disc is a thin dark line which is believed by some histologists to mark the position of a membrane (Krause's membrane) separating the length of the fibril into a series of partially isolated segments. 1970Fallis & Ashworth Textbk. Human Histol. viii. 58 The major cross bands of the myofibrils are the A and I bands... In the center of the I band is a thin dark line known as the Z (Zwischenscheibe) band, or intermediate line of Krause; the Z band attaches to the sarcolemma at the periphery of the cell. c.1905Trans.
