isotactic, a. Chem.|aɪsəʊˈtæktɪk| [f. iso- + Gr. τακτ-ός arranged, ordered + -ic, as ad. It. isotattico (G. Natta 1955, in Atti d. Accad. Naz. d. Lincei, Mem. (Classe d. Sci. fis.) 8th Ser. IV. ii. 69), f. Attic τάττ-ειν (= Gr. τάσσειν) to arrange.] Having or designating a polymeric structure in which all the repeating units have the same stereochemical configuration.
1955Chem. Abstr. XLIX. 12912 The designation ‘isotactic’ is applied to chain polymers contg. alternating CH2 and asym. C groups of identical configuration. 1963Times 11 June 19/1 The entry into production of the Brindisi plant..considerably increased output of the isotactic polypropylene plastic (‘Moplen’), now becoming popular in many countries throughout the world. 1964New Scientist 23 Jan. 225 These arrangements, known as ‘isotactic’ and ‘syndiotactic’ configurations.., have now been realised with most of the common vinyl monomers. 1972Physics Bull. Nov. 666/1 Isotactic polypropylene is a useful commercial plastic noted for its high strength/weight ratio. Hence isotacˈticity, the quality of being isotactic.
1959Natta & Danusso in Jrnl. Polymer Sci. XXXIV. 7 All the arrangements which may compose the isotacticity must be only repetitive arrangements. 1968Ibid. A-2. VI. 1495 The isotacticity and the crystallizability of the original sample remain unchanged after degradation. |
