Iran, n.|ɪˈrɑːn| [The name of a republic (formerly Persia) in south-west Asia: see Iranian a. and n.] Comb. Iran–contra U.S. Pol. [contra n.2], used attrib. and absol. with reference to the arrangement whereby agents of the executive branch of the U.S. Government secretly sold arms to Iran in 1986, diverting the profits to the Nicaraguan contras in violation of Congressional resolutions.
