单词 -ion
释义 I. -ion, suffix1
repr. F. -ion, L. -io, -iōnem, a suffix forming ns. of condition or action, rarely formed from adjs. or ns., as commūniōn-em sharing in common, portiōn-em share, rebelliōn-em rebellion, tālion-em retaliation; sometimes from the verb-stem, as alluviōn-em alluvion, condiciōn-em terms of agreement, legiōn-em a chosen body of soldiers, obliviōn-em forgetfulness, opiniōn-em opinion; but chiefly from the ppl. or supine stem in t-, s-, x-, where it was a permanent possibility, and, from most verbs, in actual use, e.g. damnātiōn-em condemning, complētiōn-em fulfilling, monitiōn-em warning, munītiōn-em fortification, nōtiōn-em a taking note, solūtiōn-em loosening, actiōn-em acting, mansiōn-em staying, abode, missiōn-em sending, co(n)nexiōn-em close union. Examples of all these classes occur in English, through Fr. or from L. directly, or formed analogically in Eng. itself, e.g. union, portion, religion, oblivion, but chiefly those in -tion, (-sion, -xion), as damnation, completion, munition, notion, pollution, action, session, connexion; the form in -ation (q.v.) is by far the most frequent, and has become a living formative.
II. -ion, suffix2
the ending of inion1, proposed by P. Broca, 1875 (in Bull. de la Soc. d'Anthrop. de Paris X. 346), as a suffix for forming the names of other craniometric points (as gnathion, gonion).
III. -ion, suffix3
the word ion added to abbreviated forms of the names of elements and radicals to form the names of their ions, as chlorion, hydrion, nitrion, sodion.
IV. -ion, suffix4
(See quot. and alliance n. 6.)
1930F. R. Bharucha tr. Braun-Blanquet's Vocab. Plant Sociol. 23 For designation of Alliances, the suffix ‘-ion’ is added to the radical of the name of one of the principal associations of the alliance. Ex. Ammophilion-Genisteto-Vaccinion.
