ventriculography Med.|vɛntrɪkjʊˈlɒgrəfɪ| [f. ventriculo- + -graphy.] Radiography of the brain with the cerebral fluid of the ventricles replaced by air or some other contrast medium. Hence venˌtriculoˈgraphic a.; also venˈtriculogram, a radiogram of the ventricles of the brain.
1918W. E. Dandy in Ann. Surg. LXVIII. 5 (heading) Ventriculography following the injection of air into the cerebral ventricles. Ibid. 7 Owing to the lighter weight of air, the ventriculogram represents the ventricle farthest from the X-ray plate. 1932Amer. Jrnl. Roentgenol. XXVII. 660/1 The size of the lateral ventricle, and the patency of the foramen of Munro, can be determined readily during this particular part of the ventriculographic procedure. 1936Brit. Med. Jrnl. 28 Mar. 661/2 The usual procedure..was to make a ventriculogram first thing in the morning, and start operating two or three hours later. 1947Radiology XLVIII. 59/1 Ventriculography..showed the posterior portions of both lateral ventricles to be dilated and revealed similar enlargement of the temporal horns. 1974C. B. T. Adams in R. M. Kirk et al. Surgery xiv. 273/2 Often, the brain plugs the fracture and a rise of intranasal pressure by nose blowing forces the air into the brain, an aerocele, and, occasionally, into the ventricle, producing a ventriculogram on X-ray. 1978Science 24 Feb. 854/1 Asymmetries in the size of the left and right lateral ventricles [of the brain] can..be demonstrated..by injecting air into the ventricles during pneumoencephalography and ventriculography. |
