1727–41Chambers Cycl., Impastation, the mixtion of divers materials of different colours and consistences, baked or bound together with some cement, and hardened either by the air, or fire. Impastation is sometimes a sort of masons-work, made of stucco, or stone ground small, and wrought up again in manner of a paste. 1855Mayne Expos.
