vanthoffite Min.|væntˈhɒfaɪt| [ad. G. vanthoffit (K. Kubierschky 1902, in Sitzungsber. d. Preuss. Akad. d. Wissensch. zu Berlin XXI. 407), f. the name of J. H. van't Hoff, who first synthesized the compound: see -ite1.] A sulphate of sodium and magnesium, Na6Mg(SO4)4, found as colourless, grey, or pale yellow monoclinic crystals that are transparent with a vitreous lustre and occur esp. in oceanic salt deposits.
