Orig., any abdominal appendage of a crustacean; now spec. each of the sixth and last pair of abdominal appendages of malacostracan crustacea, which together form part of the tail fan in lobsters.

Stebbing Crustacea iv. 46 In Amphipoda the fourth and fifth pairs [of abdominal appendages] are more or less adapted for springing, and bear the name of uropods, or tail-feet. This name is also given to the appendages of the twentieth segment whenever they are present. 1933R. H.
