Orig., any abdominal appendage of a crustacean; now spec. each of the sixth and last pair of abdominal appendages of malacostracan crustacea, which together form part of the tail fan in lobsters.
[1884A. Sedgwick tr. Claus's Elem. Text-bk. Zool. x. 454 The three posterior pairs of abdominal feet (uropoda) are well developed and often much elongated.]1893T. R. R. Stebbing Crustacea iv. 46 In Amphipoda the fourth and fifth pairs [of abdominal appendages] are more or less adapted for springing, and bear the name of uropods, or tail-feet. This name is also given to the appendages of the twentieth segment whenever they are present.1933R. H.
