‖ ur-, prefix|ʊər| repr. G. (also MHG., OHG.) ur-, denoting ‘primitive, original, earliest,’ as ur-Hamlet, ur-origin, ur-stock, etc. See also Urheimat, Urschleim, Ursprache, Urtext. G. ursprache (= primitive language) has been freq. used in recent English philological works.
