The name of a Central American republic and of the nearby British Honduras (now Belize), used attrib. to designate various plants native to the area, as Honduras bark, the dried bark of the tree Picramnia antidesma, also called cascara amarga, and formerly used to treat dysentery, syphilis, and other diseases; Honduras cedar, a local species of Cedrela, esp. C. odorata; Honduras mahogany, Swietenia macrophylla; Honduras rosewood, a species of Dalbergia, esp. D. stevensonii; Honduras sarsaparilla, the dried root of Smilax ornata, used in various medical preparations or as a flavouring.
