The exudation of liquid from a plant, esp. from hydathodes in the leaves or from fungal mycelia.
1889in Cent. Dict.1900A. J. Ewart tr. Pfeffer's Physiol. Plants I. vi. 253 Burgerstein uses the special term ‘Guttation’ when the water escapes through water⁓pores.1909Groom & Balfour tr. Warming's Oecology of Plants xxix. 101 Not only in the tropical rain-forest, but also in the temperate countries, are there many plants, especially herbs, exhibiting the phenomenon of guttation.1932Fuller & Conard tr. Braun-Blanquet's Plant Sociol. v. 127 Guttation is especially common in warm, moist, tropical forests.1966F. M. Irvine tr. Lundegårdh's Plant Physiol. vi. 296 In some trees and in many herbs the active xylem stream usually leaks through the hydathodes or in other ways if transpiration is restricted; this is the guttation phenomenon. Guttation occurs in almost all plants.
