gompaauw, gompauw S. Afr. (ˈgɒmpɑːuː, ‖ ˈxɔmpəʊ) [f. Afrikaans and Du. gom gum + Du. paauw, pauw peacock (cf. pouw).] The giant or kori bustard, Ardeotis kori.
1838J. E. Alexander Exped. Disc. Int. Africa II. viii. 141 Here a gum pauw, or bustard, which subsists partly on gum, was shot. 1905W. L. Sclater in Science in S. Afr. 143 The Bustards (Otidæ) are represented by no less than twelve species, ranging from the large Gom Paauw (Otis kori), the male of which sometimes weighs as much as 40 lbs. to the smaller Knorhaan (Otis afra) about the same size as a partridge. 1936Blackw.
