josephinite Min.|ˈdʒəʊzɪfɪnaɪt, dʒəʊzɪˈfiːnaɪt| [f. Josephine, the name of the county in southwestern Oregon where it was first found: see -ite1.] The terrestrial (as opposed to meteoric) alloy of nickel and iron, having about 67 to 77 per cent of nickel.
1892W. H. Melville in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. CXLIII. 509 (heading) Josephinite; a new nickel-iron. Ibid. 514 The placer gravel, in which josephinite is found. 1905Ibid. CLXIX. 415 It is seen from a glance at the analyses of the alloys from the five different localities, that there is a certain uniformity in composition, but that they are not a definite compound of iron and nickel is evident, nor would this be expected... It seems unfortunate that so rare a substance should have received three distinct names, awaruite, josephinite, and souesite, and it is urged that awaruite, which has priority, should alone be used. 1950Mineral. Mag. XXIX. 390 The occurrences of native nickel-iron regarded as magmatic secretions from peridotites (awaruite, josephinite, souesite, &c.) are certainly formations of extremely low temperatures. |
