aircraft|ˈɛəkrɑːft, -æ-| [f. air- III. + craft n. 9.] Flying-machines collectively; a flying-machine. Since the 1930s commonly restricted to denote an aeroplane (as distinct from a balloon or airship) or aeroplanes collectively. The nineteenth-century examples refer to balloons and airships.
