‖ Tritoma Bot. (ˈtrɪtəmə, incorrectly traɪˈtəʊmə) [mod.L. (J. B. Ker 1804, in Curtis's Bot. Mag. XX. 744), f. Gr. τρίτοµος thrice-cut, f. τρι- three + -τοµος cut; from the capsule splitting into three valves.] A genus of liliaceous plants (also called Kniphofia), natives of South Africa, with spikes of scarlet or yellow flowers; several species in cultivation are popularly called flame-flower or red-hot poker; kniphofia.
