‖ Steneosaurus|stɛnɪəˈsɔːrəs| Also anglicized steneosaur. [mod.L., badly formed (after Teleosaurus) on Gr. στενό-ς narrow + σαῦρος lizard.] A fossil genus of saurians characterized by a narrow beak. Hence steneoˈsaurian a., belonging to this genus.
1836Buckland Geol. & Min. consid. (1837) I. 252 note, M. Geoffroy St. Hilaire has arranged the fossil Saurians with long and narrow beaks, like that of the Gavial, under the two new genera, Teleosaurus and Steneosaurus. 1869Hulke in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. XXVI. 168 Dr. Rolleston..informs me that these bones are also shown in a cast of the Honfleur (Geneva) Steneosaur in the Oxford Museum, and that the relations of the bones in the upper surface of a Steneosaurian skull from Shotover exactly correspond with those figured in the ‘Ossemens Fossiles’. 1896H.
