    ) used to indicate a major division in a sentence where a distinct separation is felt between clauses, or among items on a list. Semicolons separate clauses and are often used with words like[however, nevertheless,]and[therefore]. Semicolons indicate a break that is longer than a comma, but shorter than a period:We were late for the party; however, the hostess didn't mind too much.
