A name given to several species of Salsola from which soda is made, by burning the barilla in heaps and lixiviating the ashes.

Salsola Kali, an allied plant with rigid, fleshy, spinous-pointed leaves, which was used for the same purpose, was known as prickly glasswort.

The Salsola was growing in a broad belt around the small salt lakes, its colour varying from orange to the deepest crimson.
