“We, the Shiites, are fighting to defend our ideology, religion, holy places and the state against terrorists,” said a Shiite cleric in Beirut.

“This attack targeted innocent civilians — including children — in a holy place,” Mr. Abdullah wrote on his Twitter account.

It is a holy place now, having saved hundreds of villagers during the worst of Hurricane Matthew, when nature tore their homes to the ground.
