- Jerome David Salinger (1919-2010) a US writer of novels and short stories which were especially popular with college and university students in the 1950s and 1960s. His best-known novel is The Catcher in the Rye. Many of Salinger's short stories were published in The New Yorker. He was famous for his dislike of appearing in public.
