Liberty Bonds

[plural]- a special issue of US government bonds (= official papers that are sold with the promise to pay the money back, with interest, on a certain date). Liberty Bonds were sold to raise money for the First World War. Hollywood stars and other famous people attended large public meetings to encourage citizens to buy them, and John Philip Sousa wrote a Liberty Bond March. The total amount of money raised was about $23 billion.
